Workplace can become happier.

It all starts on a dreadful otherwise beautiful Saturday at work. Where Pal is all joyous and whistling while commencing his work. Along comes Mike, who for no reason starts scattering things around Pal’s cubicle. At first Pal tries to ignore but then at last, his impatience gets the best of him and he confronts Mike.

Pal, ‘’Why are you scattering things? Who is going to clean up?’’

Mike, ‘’Obviously you. Who else?’’

Pal, ‘’ And why is it so?’’

Mike, ‘’ Do not forget your place!’’

After this conversation Mike walks away leaving Pal a bit astonished and thinking as to where that come from. As he is left bewildered by the sudden outburst of anger, he goes back to work but with distraught mind. He keeps thinking what did he do wrong? He cannot concentrate on work for quite some time.

Then miraculously he just realises it was not even his fault to begin with. It was just a simple case of a superior flexing his dominance over newer staff. Although one of his colleagues advises him to complain all this to higher administration to have his peace of mind back, but Pal thinks better of it. He responds, ‘’ Would not that put my peace of mind in the administration’s hand. As why should anyone besides me get to decide how my day should unfold.’’

This is becoming a daily torture for working class people in general. They must endure all the difficulties and challenges the work life throw at them and to top it, face bad treatment and discrimination at work. As we have seen above, the employee with no fault of his, being ridiculed for no apparent reason other than a superior showing off his authority just to belittle the employee and feed his ego.

It is human nature to seek validation to drive their self esteem to a point where they start to feel the high of power. But it must not be at cost of someone’s mental wellbeing. As Pal decides to not react because deep within, he knows exactly that if someone is being rude for no reason means, that person is dissatisfied in his own life. So, for Pal this should not be a matter of utmost concern. Instead, he tells himself that, his happiness is only in his hands and no one else’s. He goes home, has his regular Saturday routine, and sits down to write his experience for others to learn from.

One must always remember that his happiness is his own business and unless one does not let other people and their words control him, has total control over it. If someone tries to belittle you, keep in mind that it is his perception of you and not yours. It is you who must choose how do you react to it. One way to go is react and face the outcomes or just carry on with your life without bothering yourself with unwanted negativity.

As negativity has the potential to eat you from inside out. The good old way of meditation comes to the rescue. In the morning seek positive energy and, in the evening, send out all the negativity that you might have accumulated on the way. As you cannot change the people’s behaviour, but you can change your perspective.

To conclude, I say be happy with your life and do not be too hard on yourself. And let the opinionated people have as many opinions as much they want. Important thing is, if you respect yourself then the belittling would not do you any considerable harm.

Till next time, J. Matharu!
